AMADEO de SOUZA-CARDOSO

Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887 - 1918) was a celebrated Portuguese artist who is known for his modernist and futuristic paintings.  Cardoso's early works, were stylistically close to impressionism, which incrementally morphed around 1910, by influences both in cubism and futurism, catapulting Cardoso into one of the first modernist Portuguese painters.

Cardoso's style was aggressive and vivid both in form and colour and his works may seem random or chaotic in their compositional structure at first but are clearly defined and balanced on closer inspection. Even considering his short life span - due to succumbing to the Spanish Flu at just 30 years old, Cardoso was an artist who left an undeniable mark on the history of modern art in Portugal, thanks to his commitment and prolific artwork, whilst embracing fresh ideas of the current art scene of the time.
