  • Print Description
Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night, 1889 is one of the most inspired, iconic images of the 19th century. The night sky is brimming with swirling clouds, shining stars and a bright crescent moon.  The swirling sky directs the viewers eye around the painting, the space between the stars and the curving luminous contours.  In comparison the village is peaceful whilst the night sky is dramatic and vivid and the silence of the night can almost be felt. Van Gogh's use of colour is used with great effect the white, yellow and blues creates a spiral effect and draws attention to the sky, the alternating vertical lines such as the cypress tree and church tower softly break up the composition without distracting from the powerful night sky.  Starry Night shows the vast power of both nature and man, a captivating art print worthy of a special place in a contemporary or vintage interior decor.

The Artist

VINCENT VAN GOGH

Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 - 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.

In just over a decade, Van Gogh created about 2,100 artworks, including some 860 oil paintings. They include landscapes, still life's, portraits and self-portraits and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.

Van Gogh became famous after his death and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood genius, the artist "where discourses on madness and creativity converge".

Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive painting to have ever sold and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings.
