Dancers at the Barre is a captivating piece of 19th century art that was started by celebrated French artist Edgar Degas in the 1880's and worked on by Degas for the next 20 years of his life.  The two dancers are the main focal point of this piece and are stretching at the Barre, slowly moving and warming up - for a ballet dancers day always begins at the Barre.  Degas showcases these two dancers in their identical blue tutu's at opposing angles at the Barre and manages to make these dancers bend, stretch and twist with his use of oil and pastel on canvas.  The magnetic colour palette completes this masterful piece of art with a burnt orange wall and contrasting blues and whites brings Degas's dancers to life.  A stunning reproduction worthy of a special place in a contemporary or vintage inspired interior decor.

The Artist

EDGAR DEGAS

Edgar Degas (1834 – 1917) was a highly celebrated French impressionist artist of the 19th century famous for his pastel drawings and oil paintings of ballerinas, Degas helped shape the fine art landscape throughout modern art history.

Edgar Degas studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and became renowned as a portraitist, fusing Impressionistic sensibilities with traditional approaches. Degas enjoyed capturing female dancers - as movement and the human form was his artistic playground, Degas showcased the contrasting awkward humility of the dancer backstage with her majestic grace in the midst of performance. His work influenced several major modern artists, including Pablo Picasso.

One thing remains undeniable about Degas: His were among the most painstakingly polished and refined painters in history.
