  • Print Description

The Piano Lesson was painted by Henri Matisse in 1916 showcasing Matisse's living room in his home in Paris, France, with his oldest son Pierre at the piano. Matisse has removed details of the room as he's painted this piece and rebuilt sections in broad fields of colour and geometrical shapes to depict the changing light in this idyllic scene. The Piano Lesson evokes a sense of uninterrupted solace making specific note of his sculpture Decorative Figure at the bottom left and his painting of Woman on a High Stool in the top right of this painting showcasing his other artworks around his home. The Piano Lesson shows a myriad of pastel colours and a glimpse into Matisse's life during the early 20th century.
