  • Print Description
A November Morning was painted by John Atkinson Grimshaw in 1883 during the golden age of architecture. Grimshaw showcases his fascination of the stately manors of Victoria, Leeds in A November Morning, the blanket of autumn leaves on the narrow lane combined with the glory of an autumn morning where the first glow of the sun rises and burnishes the sky with its radiance. Grimshaw also provides the viewer some mystery in the destination of the maid walking on the pavement as the lane sweeps to the left in the distance where the mist can be seen lingering in the damp air. A November Morning is a symphony of gold, russets and pale moss greens in a captivating 19th century Grimshaw scene, worthy of a special place in a contemporary or traditionalist interior decor.

John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 - 1893) was an English, Victorian era artist best known for his poetic nocturnal scenes of both urban and rural British landscapes.  Grimshaw's paintings have an almost supernatural clarity in which all elements of the composition are in focus.  Today, Grimshaw is considered one of the greatest painters of the Victorian era, as well as one of the best and most accomplished nightscape and townscape artists of all time. He was called a "remarkable and imaginative painter" by critic and historian Christopher Wood.

Grimshaw's paintings are predominantly housed in secure collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and the Leeds Gallery in the United Kingdom.
