  • Print Description
Bouquet of Flowers in a Vase was created by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, a unique van Gogh piece due to the landscape techniques he used instead of his more subtle approach to still life paintings. van Gogh loved flowers and painting them, he wrote to his brother, Theo, “I for myself am contented, for better or for worse, to be a small gardener who loves his plants.” The striking colour palette of blooming white, orange and yellow chrysanthemums, pink begonias and the red poppy are balanced against a dark blue background that fades into a reddish brown table as the vase is engulfed at the base by a fern. van Gogh's brushstrokes are strong and straight depicting the background, with contrasting loose and wavy strokes to breathe life into the colourful array of flowers. Bouquet of Flowers in a Vase employs a captivating composition, balanced abstract musings showcasing van Gogh's mastery of painting flowers in his remarkable impressionist style.

The Artist

Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 - 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.

In just over a decade, Van Gogh created about 2,100 artworks, including some 860 oil paintings. They include landscapes, still life's, portraits and self-portraits and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.

Van Gogh became famous after his death and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood genius, the artist "where discourses on madness and creativity converge".

Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings.
