  • Print Description
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec created this horse racing lithograph Der Jockey or The Jockey in 1899, which became one of the last artworks made by Lautrec. The celebrated artist was an avid visitor to the horse races and had intended to create a series of racetrack subjects, however Lautrec's health prevented him from completing this series. Der Jockey is a dynamic art print and presents the jockey in an rare 'from behind' perspective, Lautrec showcases his skill to merge the man and animal's joint performance as they approach a bend in the track. This perspective that Lautrec has used provides not only a united vantage point for the viewer but the convergence of both man and horse. Originally rendered with a neutral colour palette with crayon on china paper, Der Jockey is a captivating 19th century racing lithograph reproduction.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 - 1901) was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist and illustrator whose immersion in the colourful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century allowed him to produce a collection of enticing, elegant and provocative art of the modern, sometimes decadent, affairs of those times.

Toulouse-Lautrec is among the best-known painters of the Post-Impressionist period, and was considered as prominent as celebrated artists Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.

In a 2005 auction at Christie's auction house, La Blanchisseuse (The Laundress), sold for US$22.4 million and set a new record for the artist for a price at auction.
