  • Print Description
Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted with oil on wood Hunters in the Snow (Winter) in 1565. Bruegel offers the viewer a bird's eye view of a village locked in snow, a medieval winter pictorial landscape. As three hunters and their dogs return to their village, Bruegel's vantage point offers the viewer a look into a village teeming with life, ice skaters in the distance, an Inn to the hunters left and its rust-coloured bricks and blazing outdoor fire - the snow covered thatched roofs and the jagged mountain tops in the distance. Hunters in the Snow (Winter) was painted in the early Renaissance style of the 16th century and showcases an overall calm, Netherlands village with neutral whites and greys, trees bare of leaves and wood smoke that hangs in the air. Bruegel's attention to detail and balanced colour pigments and composition makes this reproduction a special addition to a variety of interior decors.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525–1530 – 1569) was the most significant artist of the Dutch and Flemish Renaissance era.  A painter printmaker, known for his peasant scenes and landscapes.  Bruegel was the formative influence on the Dutch Golden Age, and was the first in his generation to stop painting religious subjects instead opting for nature and landscape scenes instead. Bruegel worked mainly as a prolific designer for the leading publisher in Antwerp and then focussed on painting as his main medium in the later years of his life.

All of Bruegel's famous paintings come from the period of little more than a decade before his early death, when he was in his early forties and at the height of his influential career.
