  • Print Description
In Peril or The Harbour Flare was painted in a romanticism style with oil on canvas by John Atkinson Grimshaw in 1879. Grimshaw was a celebrated specialist of nocturnal scenes as is evident in the remarkable In Peril. Grimshaw shows the viewer, members of families of the fishermen, tending to a beacon by the harbour entrance as they wait in the moonlit, night air for their husbands, fathers and sons to return home safely, but as the wind and waves are building, this may make their safe return more difficult. Grimshaw has rendered this atmospheric artwork in deep hues of green, blue and yellow, showcasing the share strength of the waves to the right hand side ferociously crashing against the harbour wall. In Peril is a captivating reproduction worthy of a special place in a living room or bedroom setting.

John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 - 1893) was an English, Victorian era artist best known for his poetic nocturnal scenes of both urban and rural British landscapes.  Grimshaw's paintings have an almost supernatural clarity in which all elements of the composition are in focus.  Today, Grimshaw is considered one of the greatest painters of the Victorian era, as well as one of the best and most accomplished nightscape and townscape artists of all time. He was called a "remarkable and imaginative painter" by critic and historian Christopher Wood.

Grimshaw's paintings are predominantly housed in secure collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and the Leeds Gallery in the United Kingdom.
