Joan of Arc

by dante gabriel rossetti

From: $89.00
  • Print Description

From the mid 1860s Dante Rossetti painted a series of passionate heroines from Helen of Troy, Sibylla Palmifera, Lady Lilith and Pandora. Rossetti then added the subject of Joan of Arc to this majestic series in 1864. Joan of Arc was a character that Rossetti depicted as a sensual warrior-maiden in a battlefield tent decorated with detailed Fleur-de-lys motifs. Her captivating eyes are turned towards the heavens as she holds the Sword of Deliverance making her final prayers before battle. Rossetti's love for subjects in which the themes of women, beauty and battle are interwoven, and showcases this in a finely balanced composition of cold shining armour and chainmail gives an added contrast to the warm flesh, embroidered tunic and Joan's luminous cascading hair. Rossetti's Joan of Arc reproduction is an enchanting print worthy of a special place in a living room or bedroom setting.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 – 1882) was a famed British painter and poet known as the eminent member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.  Dante left a other worldly legacy of ethereal portraits of women from mythological and classical literature.

Dante turned away from detailed religious scenes, investing instead in his obsession with female beauty, which he explored mostly through portraiture. Mythological portraits became most of his life's work and the goddesses, tragic heroines and saints Dante brought to life were based around a handful of long-time lovers and muses.

It is well known that the author J.R.R Tolkien took inspiration from Dante's Pre-Raphaelite scenes for his vision of "middle earth" as depicted in The Lord of the Rings.

Today, Dante's works are held in celebrated collections at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London.
