The Artist

Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky (1866 - 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist and is credited as the pioneer of abstract art.  After successful avant-garde exhibitions early in his career, Kandinsky founded the influential Munich group Der Blaue Reiter (“The Blue Rider”; 1911–14) and began solely focused on abstract painting. His forms evolved from fluid and organic to geometric and finally, to pictographic.

His influence on 20th-century art was so profound, Kandinsky's art is still celebrated in popular culture today.
