  • Print Description
Henri Matisse painted the captivating La Blouse Roumaine or The Romanian Blouse in 1940. Matisse was inspired by traditional Romanian clothes after receiving a collection of Romanian folk blouses as a gift from good friend Theodor Pallady, one of the most idolised Romanian painters of the time. During one of the darkest periods of war, when France was under occupation, Matisse painted La Blouse Roumaine as an antidote to the hardship of war, this reproduction represented optimism and hope in a otherwise war torn country. The richly embroidered Romanian blouse shows a rhythmic balance against the burnt red colour pigments and the luxurious full sleeves and showcases Matisse's signature minimalist depiction of the woman's face. La Blouse Roumaine engages a striking composition where the models head and skirt flow over the canvas edge, leaning to one side in a distinct heart shape pose.
