  • Print Description
Pieter Bruegel the Elder was celebrated during his life as the master of realism, with most of his famous paintings being landscapes scenes or the detailed life of peasants. Bruegel's dramatic setting of Landscape with the Flight into Egypt is one of his religion-based landscapes based on the story of Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus fleeing persecution in Bethlehem. Bruegel's painting of this popular 16th century theme is highly celebrated due to his depiction of the striking North European landscape, the nature dominates this reproduction with the refugees set above a river valley, bordered by craggy mountain peaks whilst the family assimilate easily into the landscape creating an ethereal almost surreal 16th century landscape piece.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525–1530 – 1569) was the most significant artist of the Dutch and Flemish Renaissance era.  A painter printmaker, known for his peasant scenes and landscapes.  Bruegel was the formative influence on the Dutch Golden Age, and was the first in his generation to stop painting religious subjects instead opting for nature and landscape scenes instead. Bruegel worked mainly as a prolific designer for the leading publisher in Antwerp and then focussed on painting as his main medium in the later years of his life.

All of Bruegel's famous paintings come from the period of little more than a decade before his early death, when he was in his early forties and at the height of his influential career.
