  • Print Description
John Atkinson Grimshaw's depiction of the Liverpool Docks in 19th century Liverpool, England captures the beautiful evocations of the victorian industrial era. Grimshaw's nocturnal scene of the fog and mist are so accurate and showcase to the viewer the chill in the damp air with the contrasting light sources, such as the iridescent moon and gaslights from the shop interiors spilling onto the street, creating patterns of reflections on the rain-drenched pavement. Liverpool Docks captures the forest of trading ship masts and the two horse drawn carriages in the distance, with nighthawks walking the streets and gazing into the warmth of the trading shop windows. The ambience of Grimshaw's Liverpool Docks is captivating, a reproduction worthy of a special place in a living room or bedroom setting.

John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 - 1893) was an English, Victorian era artist best known for his poetic nocturnal scenes of both urban and rural British landscapes.  Grimshaw's paintings have an almost supernatural clarity in which all elements of the composition are in focus.  Today, Grimshaw is considered one of the greatest painters of the Victorian era, as well as one of the best and most accomplished nightscape and townscape artists of all time. He was called a "remarkable and imaginative painter" by critic and historian Christopher Wood.

Grimshaw's paintings are predominantly housed in secure collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and the Leeds Gallery in the United Kingdom.
