  • Print Description
The Lyrical, 1911 was part of a fifty-six woodcut series that started Wassily Kandinsky's crucial transition from representational to abstract art between 1907 and 1911. The woodcuts would veil Kandinsky's subject matter creating more increasingly abstract images, this period in Kandinsky's career is considered the beginning of his creative genius period.   This iconic Lyrical reproduction showcases a person riding a horse at full gallop, which Kandinsky has rendered in a minimal but bright colour palette.  Kandinsky believed that the blank space has as much relevance as the illustrated space though the horse and rider, his symbol for overcoming objective representation, runs through as a leitmotif (pattern).  Lyrical is a historically significant piece of art that is worthy of a special place in a contemporary or vintage inspired interior decor.

The Artist

Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky (1866 - 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist and is credited as the pioneer of abstract art.  After successful avant-garde exhibitions early in his career, Kandinsky founded the influential Munich group Der Blaue Reiter (“The Blue Rider”; 1911–14) and began solely focused on abstract painting. His forms evolved from fluid and organic to geometric and finally, to pictographic.

His influence on 20th-century art was so profound, Kandinsky's art is still celebrated in popular culture today.
