  • Print Description
In 1875 John Atkinson Grimshaw painted a popular subject of his, that of lonely figure walking an English lane. One of Grimshaw's most successful creations Near Hackness captures the evening-nocturnal scene with a farmer returning from the fields with his horses and rural carriage. Grimshaw showcases the picturesque Yorkshire landscape in rich moonlit tones, capturing the quiet of country life in a romanticism oil on canvas painting. The fine observation of the cart tracks on the road, the shadows cast by the lofty trees, the stratus clouds transcended by moonlit combine to draw the viewers eye to the country lane creating an overall poetic mood. Near Hackness is a captivating 19th century reproduction worthy of a special place in a contemporary or traditionalist interior decor setting.

John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 - 1893) was an English, Victorian era artist best known for his poetic nocturnal scenes of both urban and rural British landscapes.  Grimshaw's paintings have an almost supernatural clarity in which all elements of the composition are in focus.  Today, Grimshaw is considered one of the greatest painters of the Victorian era, as well as one of the best and most accomplished nightscape and townscape artists of all time. He was called a "remarkable and imaginative painter" by critic and historian Christopher Wood.

Grimshaw's paintings are predominantly housed in secure collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and the Leeds Gallery in the United Kingdom.
