  • Print Description
Nighthawks is one of the most recognisable paintings in American art history. This art print depicts a diner in Greenwich Village, Manhattan where lonely Nighthawks go late at night, to be surrounded by other lonely patrons in a diner which lights up a darkened street corner. Painted by one of the most influential artists in modern pop culture, Edward Hopper's fame and legacy is still prevalent today.  Nighthawks was painted with oil on canvas in 1942 and immediately became a classic due to Hoppers captivating imagery and relatable scene. A remarkable piece of art history, that exudes still to this day contemporary style.

The Artist

EDWARD HOPPER

Edward Hopper (1882 - 1967) was a celebrated American realist painter and printmaker.  While he is widely known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker in etching.

No other artist at the time, managed to capture the solitude within the modern city like Edward Hopper. The ‘artist of empty spaces’ offers a look at life of Americans during World War I. Hopper depicted the spirit of the time very subtly, showing it in the poses of characters, in the vast empty spaces around them and also in his harmonious colour palettes of the era.

Hopper's influence on the art world and pop culture is undeniable, most notably his most recognisable 'Nighthawks' painting being referred to in movies, television, music and literature, still to this day.
