  • Print Description
      Between 1908 and 1914, Redon repeatedly depicted beautiful women from classical mythology, including Pandora in 1914. Odilon Redon showcases Pandora in a state of perfect innocence, surrounded by flowers, like Eve in the Garden of Eden. Redon was highly influential among the late 19th century French avant-garde movement creating supernatural scenes, writing "every time that a human figure does not give the illusion that it is....about to come out of the picture frame to walk, act or think, the drawing is not a truly modern one". According to legend, when Pandora opened the box cradled in her arms, she unleashed all the evils destined to plague humanity, bringing an end to the Golden Age. Redon has rendered Pandora in a soft pastel symphony of flowers as she stands in an idyllic feminine pose in almost central composition. Pandora is a serene reproduction worthy of a special place in a living room or bedroom setting.

The Artist

ODILON REDON

Redon began his career as a draftsman in charcoal (a series of art which he called the 'Noirs'), and lithographer, working almost exclusively with black, but after 1900 he began to explore new motifs, flowers becoming a favoured subject, rendered in vivid colour in oils and pastel. After 1886, when the term was defined, Redon was considered to be a paragon of Symbolist art. Pastels and oils became Redon's favourite medium in the 1890's and he also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Buddhism religion and culture which increasingly became the subject of his work. He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, and portraying 'the triumph of light over darkness'.

Redon describing his work;

"My drawings inspire, and are not to be defined. They place us, as does music, in the ambiguous realm of the undetermined".
