Self Portrait with Straw Hat

by vincent van gogh

From: $89.00
  • Print Description

Vincent van Gogh painted dozens of self portraits during his life, it was a particularly important part of his oeuvre (body of work). It is said that most of van Gogh's self portraits are depicting his face as it appeared in a mirror, and his right side in the image is in reality the left side of his face. Self Portrait with Straw Hat was painted in the summer of 1887, Paris, as is evident in van Gogh's clothing. The striking blue and greens eyes of van Gogh gazing through this portrait makes the viewer assume he had two different eye colours, but it is said that van Gogh didn't know himself and there was a possibility he experienced colour blindness. The striking riot of brush strokes and colour in the background of this mostly neutral toned piece reminds us, how much van Gogh had a true command of colour and complimentary palettes contradictory to the colour blindness assumption. Self Portrait with Straw Hat is a captivating reproduction which now permanently resides in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

All of our frames are custom made using sustainably sourced wood and we use glass not perspex. We also offer three popular finishes of black, white and natural timber. All of our frame colours have a smooth, matte finish and have a solid structure with classic design elements that do not disappoint.

      Frame Profile

You will find that a large amount of our art encompasses a 5cm white border around the main image. We have done this to minimise additional costs associated with mat boards, which we do not supply as part of our framing process.

The Artist

VINCENT VAN GOGH

Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 - 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.

In just over a decade, Van Gogh created about 2,100 artworks, including some 860 oil paintings. They include landscapes, still life's, portraits and self-portraits and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.

Van Gogh became famous after his death and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood genius, the artist "where discourses on madness and creativity converge".

Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings.
