  • Print Description
The Church in Auvers, is one of 80 paintings that Vincent van Gogh created in the last two months of his life in 1890. After leaving the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy de Provence, van Gogh settled in Auvers-sur-Oise, a village on the outskirts of Paris. The Church in Auvers is the only painting representing in full the church in Auvers that van Gogh painted. The church was built in the 13th century showcasing early Gothic style architecture and is surrounded by two Romanesque chapels that van Gogh has rendered in his famed impressionist style. The defining feature of this reproduction is the vibrant, tonal blue sky that initially dominates this piece but slowly draws the viewers eye down to the church itself and the cascading pathways, framing the church in central composition. The Church in Auvers is stepped in architectural and impressionist art history and is worthy of a special place in a contemporary or vintage inspired interior decor.

The Artist

Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 - 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.

In just over a decade, Van Gogh created about 2,100 artworks, including some 860 oil paintings. They include landscapes, still life's, portraits and self-portraits and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.

Van Gogh became famous after his death and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood genius, the artist "where discourses on madness and creativity converge".

Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings.
