  • Print Description
The (Little) Tower of Babel is part of three paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, however the smallest of the three was lost in Rome. The surviving two paintings The (Great) Tower of Babel and The (Little) Tower of Babel  remain - and in broad terms these two paintings have exactly the same composition, but at a detailed level everything is different, whether in the architecture of the tower or in the sky and the landscape around the tower.  Created in 1563 The (Little) Tower of Babel was steeped in roman engineering, the turmoil between the religions of the time Catholicism and Protestantism and formal architecture.  This captivating reproduction showcases Bruegel the Elder's numerous arches deliberately reminiscent of the Roman Colosseum.  A spectacular reproduction, popularised through the centuries encasing an impressively intricate colour palette, The (Little) Tower of Babel is worthy of a special place in either a contemporary or vintage inspired interior decor.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525–1530 – 1569) was the most significant artist of the Dutch and Flemish Renaissance era.  A painter printmaker, known for his peasant scenes and landscapes.  Bruegel was the formative influence on the Dutch Golden Age, and was the first in his generation to stop painting religious subjects instead opting for nature and landscape scenes instead. Bruegel worked mainly as a prolific designer for the leading publisher in Antwerp and then focussed on painting as his main medium in the later years of his life.

All of Bruegel's famous paintings come from the period of little more than a decade before his early death, when he was in his early forties and at the height of his influential career.
