In the summer of September 1888, Vincent van Gogh painted The Night Café, a place he had been living above for a few months in Arles, France, whilst furnishing the iconic The Yellow House. van Gogh wrote to his brother that he was planning to paint the room and the “Night prowlers” that spent their nights there, so van Gogh slept during the day and spent three nights painting this room to capture this nocturnal scene. The Night Café depicts the interior of Café de la Gare in Arles' Place, Lamartine. A more striking van Gogh canvas would be difficult to find, but no one could call this particular painting his most profound work - although it has been popularised and celebrated by modern culture as a quintessential van Gogh piece. It was the artist's intention to show the lowest edge of humanity, without adornment, with as much impact and sincerity as possible. van Gogh’s exaggerated perspective creates disorienting angles honestly showcasing the rich red walls, contrasting yellow floor and radiant yellow lights hanging from the ceiling, amidst lonely patrons of the night and the owner Joseph Ginoux, who stands close to the pool table.

The Artist

VINCENT VAN GOGH

Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 - 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.

In just over a decade, Van Gogh created about 2,100 artworks, including some 860 oil paintings. They include landscapes, still life's, portraits and self-portraits and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.

Van Gogh became famous after his death and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood genius, the artist "where discourses on madness and creativity converge".

Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings.
