  • Print Description
The grand, surreal The (Great) Tower of Babel was created by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1563.  This artwork is steeped in roman engineering, the turmoil between the religions of the time Catholicism and Protestantism and formal architecture.  This captivating reproduction showcases Bruegel the Elder's numerous arches deliberately reminiscent of the Roman Colosseum, the meticulous precision he used to depict unfinished brick foundations and optically distorting the tower to look as though it is slightly sunk into the ground on the left side.  The (Great) Tower of Babel is supposedly legend, though remains of a vast structure, which ancient records suggest was the Tower of Babel have been found in Babylon (Iraq).  A spectacular reproduction, popularised through the centuries encasing an impressively intricate colour palette, The (Great) Tower of Babel is worthy of a special place in both contemporary and vintage inspired interior decors.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525–1530 – 1569) was the most significant artist of Dutch and Flemish Renaissance era.  A painter printmaker, known for his peasant scenes and landscapes.  Bruegel was the formative influence on the Dutch Golden Age, and was the first in his generation to stop painting religious subjects instead opting for nature and landscape scenes instead. Bruegel worked mainly as a prolific designer for the leading publisher in Antwerp and then focussed on painting as his main medium in the later years of his life.

All of Bruegel's famous paintings come from the period of little more than a decade before his early death, when he was in his early forties and at the height of his prolific and influential career.
