Claude Monet (1840 - 1926) was a French impressionist oil painter. As the founder of impressionism, Monet also created the key components and precursor to the modernist art movement.
Monet's life ambition was to document, through art, the French countryside and this consistently led him to painting the same scene many times over, as to capture the changing light and seasons. Amongst his best known paintings in these significant series is the haystacks and paintings of water lilies (particularly in his garden at his home in Giverny, France) where he painted some 250 oil paintings of water lilies.
Monet was successful during his lifetime however his fame and popularity soared in the second half of the 20th century, when he became one of the world's most famous painters and a source of inspiration for new artists.
