The Artist

EDWARD HUGHES

Edward Hughes (1851 – 1914) was an English painter who worked prominently with watercolours, but who also produced a number of significant oil paintings during the Pre-Raphaelite movement.

Hughes lived in London until 1913 when he moved to St. Albans working mainly in watercolor and gouache, painting symbolist subjects and obscure literary themes, often Italian in origin. He is also well known for his slightly idealised portraits of women, executed in red chalk. His works display the meticulous observation of nature and detailed technique associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement.  Hughes was a prolific English artist whose artwork continues to be celebrated in modern culture today.
