  • Print Description

Like many of his contemporaries William Bouguereau became interested in the culture and people of North Africa and the Middle East in the early 1870's a significant shift from his portrayals of peasant life in the French countryside. Girl with Pomegranate was created by Bouguereau in 1875, although he did not travel to Egypt Bouguereau undertook research through books, exhibitions and private collections of artefacts to accurately depict Girl with Pomegranate.  The intricate silver jewellery, the gleaming red gems of her earrings complement the rich colour of the pomegranate, its jewel-like seeds revealed by the girl's peeling of the fruit.  Girl with Pomegranate is a captivating 19th century art print worthy of a special place in a traditionalist interior decor setting.

The Artist

William Bouguereau (1825 – 1905) was a French academic, realist painter.  In his paintings Bouguereau used mythological themes, creating modern interpretations of classical subjects with a style and emphasis focused on the female body.

Bouguereau was a staunch traditionalist whose genre paintings and mythological themes were modern interpretations of classical subjects, both pagan and Christian, with a concentration on the naked female form. The idealised world of his paintings brought to life goddesses, nymphs, bathers, shepherdesses, children and madonnas in a way that appealed to wealthy art patrons of the era. Bouguereau's graceful portraits of women were considered charming, partly because he could beautify a model whilst also retaining her likeness.

Throughout the course of his life, Bouguereau executed 822 known finished paintings, although the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
